Many people aim to improve themselves at the start of the new year. Many people start a new fitness chapter and try to find their feet in the gym or tie up their running shoes, braving the cold, icy conditions.
Here to help!
Many people are highly motivated to start their fitness journey in the new year. As a result of this, it makes it one of the most prevalent times of the year to pick up an injury!
Here are some ways in which best to prevent an injury from occurring:
Pick something you enjoy – As a new year’s resolution is aimed for the whole year, choose an activity you enjoy. There are multiple ways to increase your fitness and health; going to the gym and lifting weights isn’t the only way to increase muscle bulk or definition and running or cardio isn’t the only way to lose weight. Being fit and healthy isn’t all about how you look, but how you feel, how you eat, how you rest and how you have fun! You do not have to tell yourself to go to the gym or go on a run. You can make it fun, find a new club, sport, or friend to help achieve those new year goals.
Ask for help – Everyone has started somewhere! Do not be afraid to ask for help or advice, as you will probably have to learn it at some point in your journey, so it’s better to know from early on.
Take it slow – There is no reason to rush, especially regarding fitness and exercise. Take your time and start with achievable goals. Gradually introducing your body to exercise will give your body time to adapt whilst reducing the risk of overload and injury. Consistency is the most critical component to achieving your goals. “Rome was not built in one day” – John Heywood.
Recovery plan – A recovery plan is just as important as a training plan. Muscle does not grow in the gym; they grow when you’re recovering! The body needs time to adapt and recover to the demands of the training. Recovery can be accelerated through different methods (massage, cryotherapy, hydrotherapy). Recovery is also at its best when an individual has reduced stress levels and is happy in themselves, so make time for family and friends and give yourself time to enjoy yourself and meet that balance.
Don’t be afraid to start something new! Start the process of who you want to become. Start small and keep going. There will be setbacks and that’s okay. It gives an opportunity to progress after learning. Movement is medicine and we encourage all efforts to exercise, enjoy the journey and the destination will arrive. We wish you the best for 2023!
